Sanshine: A Fun Display Font for Bright Brand Identities

I still remember the moment I opened a blank artboard for what would become our most exciting small-business project in years. The client wasn’t a tech startup or a corporate law firm; it was a local artisanal skincare brand that wanted to feel approachable, warm, and undeniably cheerful. We had discussed color palettes involving soft creams and sunny yellows, but we were stuck on the typography. Standard sans-serifs felt too sterile, and classic serifs felt too formal. That’s when I decided to test Sanshine, a fun and friendly display font, to see if it could carry the visual weight of their entire identity.

If you are a graphic designer, freelancer, or creative studio owner looking to add personality to your next branding project, this is exactly the kind of scenario where a display typeface shines. Sanshine isn’t just another decorative font; it is a carefully crafted tool designed to inject energy into your work without sacrificing legibility. In this article, I’ll walk you through how I integrated Sanshine into a real-world brand system, from the initial logo mockup to final packaging design, and why this creative font might be the missing piece in your design assets library.

First Impressions: Why Sanshine Fits the Brief

The core challenge with any display font is balancing aesthetics with function. You want the letters to pop, but you also need them to remain readable at various sizes. When I first dragged Sanshine onto the canvas, its personality was immediate. It has a rounded, inviting structure that feels modern yet playful. It doesn’t scream for attention in a chaotic way; instead, it welcomes the viewer with a smile.

This "fun and friendly" descriptor in its product description is accurate, but it undersells its versatility. While it is definitely a display font meant for headlines, logos, and short-form text, its clean lines allow it to sit comfortably alongside more traditional typefaces. For our skincare client, we needed a font that communicated natural ingredients and happy vibes. Sanshine delivered both. It avoided the trap of looking childish, which is a common pitfall with many creative fonts, and instead achieved a sophisticated playfulness that appealed to millennials and Gen Z consumers alike.

Building the Logo and Visual Hierarchy

In logo design, every pixel counts. We started by testing Sanshine as the primary logotype. Because it is a display font, it works best when given space to breathe. I experimented with different weights and tracking (letter-spacing) to find the right balance. Tighter tracking made the wordmark feel cohesive and bold, while wider tracking gave it an airy, premium feel.

Pro Tip: When using a font like Sanshine for a logo, always check how it interacts with negative space. The curves in Sanshine create interesting internal shapes that can enhance iconography. We paired the wordmark with a simple, minimalist sun icon, and the combination felt instantly recognizable. This is crucial for brand recognition. A unique typeface helps differentiate your client from competitors who rely on generic stock fonts.

We also tested Sanshine for subheadings and taglines. Its readability is surprisingly good for a display font, allowing us to use it for short phrases like “Pure Ingredients” or “Handcrafted with Love.” However, I strongly advise against using it for body copy. As a display font, it is designed to grab attention, not to sustain long-form reading. For supporting text, we switched to a clean sans serif font to maintain visual hierarchy and ensure accessibility.

Packaging Design and Product Labels

One of the most rewarding parts of this project was seeing the font come to life on physical mockups. Packaging design requires typography to work hard because it needs to stand out on crowded shelves. I placed Sanshine on label stickers, box fronts, and even embossed on tissue paper inserts.

The font’s bold presence worked exceptionally well on small formats. On a 2-inch jar label, Sanshine remained clear and distinct. The friendly curves softened the overall look of the packaging, making the product feel less clinical and more like a gift. This emotional connection is vital for consumer engagement. When customers pick up a product, the typography sets the tone before they even read the ingredient list.

Font Pairing Strategies

No single typeface can do everything, and Sanshine is no exception. To build a complete brand identity, you need font pairing. Since Sanshine is a display font with a distinct personality, it pairs beautifully with neutral, structural typefaces.

Pairing with Sans Serif Fonts: This is the safest and most modern approach. A geometric sans serif provides a stable foundation for body text, allowing Sanshine to take center stage in headlines. This contrast creates a balanced layout that feels professional yet approachable.

Pairing with Serif Fonts: For a more editorial or vintage-inspired look, you can pair Sanshine with a classic serif font. The juxtaposition of the modern, friendly display font against the traditional elegance of a serif can create a unique brand voice. This works well for boutique shops or handmade goods brands.

Avoiding Conflict: Be cautious when pairing Sanshine with other script or handwritten fonts. Both styles have strong personalities, and combining them can result in visual clutter. If you must use a script, keep it minimal and ensure it complements rather than competes with Sanshine.

Technical Considerations and Licensing

Before committing to any commercial font, it is essential to review the technical specifications. Sanshine comes with a variety of styles, which gives designers flexibility. I checked for included alternates and ligatures, as these small details can elevate a design from good to great. For instance, certain letter combinations might benefit from custom ligatures to improve flow and aesthetics.

Also, verify multilingual support if your brand targets international audiences. While Sanshine is primarily designed for English, checking for extended character sets ensures you can include special characters or accents if needed. Most importantly, understand the commercial font licensing terms. Ensure you have the appropriate license for web use, print materials, and merchandise. This protects your client from legal issues and ensures ethical use of design assets.

Testing Before Implementation

My biggest advice for any designer is to test the font extensively before locking it into a full brand system. Create a mini brand board that includes:

  1. Logo variations (light, dark, and monochrome backgrounds)
  2. Color palette applications
  3. Mockups of key touchpoints (packaging, social media, web headers)
  4. Body text samples using your paired typeface

This process reveals potential issues early. For example, you might discover that Sanshine looks too heavy on a specific background color or that it loses clarity at very small sizes. By addressing these concerns during the testing phase, you save time and money later in the production stage.

Final Thoughts on Using Sanshine

Sanshine proved to be an invaluable asset in our skincare branding project. It helped us create a visual identity that was consistent, professional, and deeply engaging. Whether you are designing for a local restaurant, a creative studio, or an online store, adding a fun and friendly display font like Sanshine can transform your work. It adds warmth, personality, and a human touch that resonates with audiences.

Remember, typography is not just about choosing pretty letters; it is about communicating your brand’s story. When you select a typeface that aligns with your client’s values, you create a stronger connection with their audience. Try Sanshine in your next creative idea, and you will likely love the results as much as we did. Happy designing!
